Nothing else than a Touch & Tell with French voices stored in the Speech-ROM.

LeLivreMagique_1_PCB.jpg (114933 Byte)The featured Le Livre Magique was manufactured September 1983 by Texas Instruments in the United States and makes use of an interesting approach: The printed circuit board (PCB) is identical with the Touch & Tell introduced one year earlier but lacks the Speech-ROM which is placed in a small white module in the Expansion Port of the toy.

Consequently we located on the PCB of this early Le Livre Magique just two Integrated Circuits:

CD8012: 4-bit TMS1100 microcontroller with 2k Bytes ROM and 128*4 Bits RAM
TMC0280/CD2802: TMS5110A VSP (Voice Synthesis Processor)

This module looks like the well known Expansion-ROMs of the original Touch & Tell and uses one TMC0350 Voice Synthesis Memory (VSM) introduced with the first version of the Speak & Spell. It obviously stores the French voice of the Le Livre Magique.

Module:

TMC0350/CDD62171: VSM (Voice Synthesis Memory) with 128k Bits capacity

Later models of the Le Livre Magique include the same Speech-ROM on the Main-PCB.

The next evolution steps are the more advanced Le Super Livre Magique and the La Lecture Magique introducing two position sensitive keyboards in a foldable housing to accept small booklets.

Texas Instruments stopped the development of this educational line in 1993 with the cute Le Petit Ours Magique.

The Le Livre Magique is featured in the Texas Instruments France SA leaflet Magiques et Intelligents dated 1991.
