In 1987 the complete design of the TI-52 and its sibling TI-30 Galaxy was revised and production of the calculators shifted from Japan to a Texas Instruments facility located in Rieti, Italy.
Dismantling
the featured TI-52 manufactured in February 1990 and comparing it with an
original TI-52 assembled in Japan reveals some
interesting differences. The original design makes use of two rigid printed
circuit boards (PCBs) while the second generation is based on only one,
two-sided flexible PCB.
The
position of the display was moved away from the upper boarder of the calculator
housing to allow the already from the TI-1030
known technology of contacting PCB traces with the LCD display using a metal
clamp.
Even
the battery compartment was redesigned and the orientation of the two batteries
changed.
