This ITT S-TRAINER looks at first glance like a simple four-function calculator, but the [PR] and [?] keys suggest an educational toy similiar to the Little Professor or Spelling B.
The S-TRAINER was actually developed in a cooperation between Spectra
Lehrmittel-Verlag, a publisher of school textbooks in Germany and ITT. The
S-TRAINER is used together with textbooks covering
Grade 1 to Grade 6 and featuring dozens of multiple choice questions, each. The
student simply enters the [PR]ogram number of each question and the number code
of the appropriate answer. The S-TRAINER confirms a correct answer with the
green LED and totals them on the 7-segment display before advancing to the next
question.
Dismantling
the S-TRAINER reveals a design based on a National Semiconductor
QuizKid with a 4-bit microcontroller
sporting just 1.5k Byte program memory. Main difference with respect to the
hardware of the QuizKid is the white connector on the right hand side of the
S-TRAINER. Inserting a little "key" allows the use of the S-TRAINER as a basic
calculator.
Eight different textbooks of the announced 42 titles are known:
